A small burst into the air intake can make the engine fire because starter fluid ignites, but the engine will die when it burns off. The CMP sensor tells the engine control unit where the camshaft is in its rotation. The ECU needs that signal to time fuel injection and ignition. On many engines, when the CMP signal drops, the engine cranks with healthy fuel pressure—and still won't start. A hot CMP failure can feel almost exactly like a hot fuel pump failure.
How do you tell them apart? Check fuel pressure during cranking. If the pressure is at spec, and the scan tool shows no CMP signal while cranking, the pump was never the problem. A code like P0340 says the CMP circuit has an issue, but it doesn't tell you whether the sensor is bad, the wiring is broken, or the timing chain has stretched.
I've seen returned CMP sensors test fine after they were blamed for a no-start. The sensor wasn't lying. The reluctor wheel was damaged, or the timing chain was stretched enough to make the signal late. A new sensor won't fix that. This is where prevention beats cure: twenty minutes of wiring and timing checks is cheaper than a comeback.
Scenario D: Ignition Parts—Even the Specified Spark Plug Matters
If fuel pressure is good and the CMP signal looks normal, move to the ignition side. A failing coil or a badly fouled spark plug can create a no-start that sounds like fuel starvation. On multi-cylinder cars, one dead plug often causes rough running rather than a complete no-start. But an ignition coil feeding several cylinders can kill spark completely.
Smaller engines are another story. The correct spark plug heat range matters more than people think. Test for spark at more than one cylinder. Confirm the ignition system is actually providing spark before you order another fuel-related part.
